Get qualified, get Chartered

By Ann Pilkington on July 11th, 2010

Got your CIPR Diploma under your belt and wondering what the next step is? You could have a think about working towards Chartered Practitioner Status. The deadline for the next batch of applications to the CIPR is approaching – 2 August. More information here.

Kevin and I went along to the CIPR AGM recently where Chartered Practitioners were receiving their certificates – among them were our very good friend – Jonathan Cross of PWP who works with us here at PR Academy. He likes to think he was the first person to be awarded the status – but that is really just cos his surname begins with ‘C’ and so he was the first to be called up on stage!

Ann alludes to my celebratory shout of success at the CIPR AGM upon becoming (one of) the first Chartered Practitioners to receive the framed certificate, but I would like to quash the rumours now that I was intending to change my name by deed poll to AAAACross to guarantee receipt of the first award.

The CIPR states that Chartered Practitioner is a senior professional status awarded to members who can demonstrate an outstanding level of professional practice and knowledge, and a commitment to continuous learning.

I had completed my diploma some years previously and enjoyed the academic challenge of considering an issue facing the industry and attemtping to advance thinking on a specialist subject area. The award is undertaken in three parts (a) an application, (b) a dissertation and (c) an interview by peer assessors. The whole process is useful in helping clarify your personal strengths – and weaknesses – in terms of professional expertise and skills but I must say I particularly enjoyed the interview and the opportunity to engage in debating issues of the day with some of the industry’s key opinion-formers.

I would thoroughly recommend undertaking the process and if anyone is interested in finding out more, I’m quite happy to give my views on what is involved and the personal benefits gained.
